Logotech Inc., of Fairfield, NJ, USA, has installed a new Hewlett Packard Indigo ws4050 digital press and an AB Graphics finishing machine. The 12-inch, seven-color press and offline finishing unit complement the company’s Gallus letterpress and Arsoma flexo machines, says Leslie Gurland, vice president.

“We have always made a commitment to investing in the best equipment and best quality technology available, and the new digital press fits our model perfectly,” says Gurland. “The Indigo will allow us to expand our capabilities in unique labels, prototypes, unsupported film, and special promotions. The finishing machine opens up almost unlimited choices for substrates, and allows us to offer the special features that parallel our letterpress and flexo labels, including varnishes and coatings, hot stamping, and diecutting.”

The installation of the new digital press coincides with a major expansion of Logotech’s prepress and design department. Digital printing allows Logotech to handle extremely efficient computer-to-press workflow, using files from nearly any graphics program, points out Anita Sparrow, Logotech’s art director.

“The digital press will be great for someone who wants to make an exact prototype, or who wants a short run of extremely high quality labels,” Sparrow says. “But also, because the cost of consumables has come down in the digital market and speed has increased, digital converting increasingly makes sense for orders as large as 16,000 to 30,000 feet — as much as three times longer than in the past.”
