Sun Chemical’s Robert O’Boyle has received the 2015 National Association of Print Ink Manufacturers (NAPIM) Pioneer Award. The award honors those who have given at least 25 years of service to the printing ink industry through their work with one or several printing ink companies or suppliers, in addition to service work with ink associations, production clubs and other committees.
NAPIM also considers technical contributions in the areas of laboratory, engineering, production or product development.
Currently a product manager of coatings at Sun Chemical, O’Boyle has held a variety of technical and management positions in the industry for over 35 years. His management in research and development has led to many water- and solvent-based inks for food and non-food packaging. He has also been instrumental in developing and advancing nanoparticle technology.
“Bob has demonstrated exemplary leadership and made significant contributions to establish Sun Chemical as a technology leader in the markets that we serve,” says Charles Murray, president, North American Inks, Sun Chemical. “He is an active participant and leader in professional organizations that serve to advance the graphic arts and packaging industries. We are pleased that NAPIM has recognized Bob with the Pioneer Award. He is a very worthy recipient.”
O’Boyle managed a global technology exchange program for Sun Chemical, which leveraged liquid ink technology from all continents. The program also demonstrated leadership by investing in sophisticated instrumentation used to characterize ink and coatings in the 1990s, invested in the use of gas chromatography-olfactory and gas chromatography mass spectroscopy to monitor ink and to discriminate between conforming and non-conforming packaging, and has developed products that have advanced the science of printing inks and coatings.
O’Boyle is a frequent speaker and member of several associations, including the FTA, TAPPI and the IoPP.
