With an ethos rich in authenticity, excellence and creativity, it’s easy to see why the distinct character of craft beer appeals to consumers. From rich, dark beers in rural English pubs to light pale ales in New York bars, sales of craft beer have grown at a revolutionary rate over the last few years, doubling from 5.7% market share of the total US beer market in 2011 to 12% in 2015. Undoubtedly, its appeal lies not only in the taste and quality of the beer, but in the spirit of independence, uniqueness and artisan quality that is key to the core brand of the craft beer industry. The use of packaging and labeling has been fundamental in building this association.
Not only does this branding reinforce the character of the product, it helps differentiate craft beer from the rest of the drinks industry as a whole. The irony of course is that craft beer has positioned itself as the antidote to multinational corporations brewing in global quantities, instead consisting of local, independent businesses brewing in smaller, local batches with greater knowledge and attention.
