RadTech urges clearance
for UV food contact use
Food packaging clearances for direct food contact using UV and EB materials such as coatings, inks and adhesives are being pursued by RadTech, an industry trade association.
“Thermally cured solvent and water-borne systems have been used by the food packaging industry for many years, but there are virtually no basic components that have been listed as yet by the FDA for the relatively recent strong emergence of UV and EB ink, adhesive, and coating formulations,” says David Diehl, president of RadTech.
Explicit FDA clearance would be a breakthrough that would offer food packaging end users “much broader access to the significant advantages of functional UV and EB cured inks, coatings and adhesives,” adds board member Ron Golden.
