Milwaukee Magazine and The Management Resource Association have declared Tailored Label Products (TLP) to be one of the “Best Places to Work in Southeastern Wisconsin.” It is the second time that the company has earned the award. TLP also received a special award for “engaging” employees.
To be considered for the award, companies fill out extensive online surveys consisting of 500 questions covering nine categories: salary, training, turnover, benefits, perks, work-life balance, diversity, employee voice, and community involvement.
TLP scored high enough to qualify for the next step: having its employees complete confidential surveys. The employee surveys were scored and combined with the company surveys to get a final score. Tailored Label Products earned high scores in employee satisfaction, low turnover and community involvement.
“We have high expectations for our employees, but we also recognize the importance of a family atmosphere and open lines of communication with management,” says Mike Erwin, co-owner and president of the company. “We want our employees to know that we sincerely value their contributions.”
The reward for “engaging” employees recognizes the effort the company makes to fully engage their employees in their jobs. This is measured via the employee surveys. One worker from Tailored Label said that the company finds ways to encourage employees “to come up with new and better ways of not only helping our company, but that of our customers also.” According to Erwin, “Tailored Label achieves this by investing in our employees, developing their skills, by growing their jobs and the impact they have on the organization. It isn’t one thing that gets you to employee engagement, it’s working at it from many different angles. It’s giving employees a sense of ownership with what they are doing; treating everyone as an individual and letting them work to their strengths.”
