There’s a lot more to labels than those that are pressure sensitive and glue-applied. Last month, in this space, we discussed the growth, attention and headway being made by linerless labels. The format’s sustainability advantages, as well as R&D investments by leading substrate suppliers and equipment OEMs, point to a growing linerless future. But it’s not the only label alternative picking up steam.

In-mold labels, otherwise known as IML, is growing. Globally, the IML market is expected to attain an evaluation north of $1.1 billion in 2023, and is projected to reach nearly $1.6 billion by 2033, rising at a CAGR of 3.3% over the 10-year span, as reported by market research firm Future Market Insights. According to the firm, one of the main drivers fueling IML growth is the growing demand for visually appealing packaging. In-mold labels and their 360-degree print coverage offer brand owners the opportunity to display more product information, which can enhance a brand’s overall image. This is in addition to the appeal of the no-label look that has been trending for years, which IML colorfully provides. Plus, IML offers enhanced color and texture, as well as exceptional, moisture-resistant durability.

IML also has eco-friendly attributes, as it enables the recycling of the entire plastic container. Digitalization, another trending topic like sustainability, is also prevalent with IML, as it allows for rapid turnaround times for short runs, variable data and design flexibility.

In-mold labels tick a lot of boxes. SABIC, a chemical company, recently partnered with three IML specialists to demonstrate the use of certified bio-renewable polypropylene (PP) resins in high-quality mono-PP thin-wall container packaging without compromising quality, processability, safety or convenience.

Multi-Color Corporation (MCC), one of the world’s largest label converters, just acquired Greece-based specialist Stephanos Karydakis IML SA. The move, according to Peter Grugeon, MCC’s president, Global IML, aims to “stimulate fresh innovations, and the increased global footprint will enable us to enhance the quality of our service and products for clients.”

Last month, MCC was announced among the winners of The In-Mold Decorating Association’s (IMDA) 2023 IMDA Awards Competition, where fresh IML innovations are front and center.  Entries were received from around the world, showcasing the best in in-mold design and technical achievement in markets ranging from food and beauty packaging to appliance and consumer electronics.

The IMDA Awards Competition is interesting in that when examining the winners, it seems to change focus every year regarding end uses. Three years ago, the submissions leaned heavily into food packaging applications. In 2022, durable goods made up the majority of the entries. This year, the IMDA competition saw a mix of each, with an emphasis on integrated functionalities such as backlighting and QR codes. This year also saw the competition receive its first in-mold labeled molded fiber application.

Regardless of the categories the entries are submitted in, the criteria remain the same – they are judged based on overall design and complexity; integration of the in-mold element into the part or package; functionality; and innovation in the use of materials and processes. Manufacturing difficulty and complexity of the part, label, design or mold also are considered, according to the IMDA.

Across the following two pages, check out what the IMDA has deemed the best in in-mold labeling and in-mold decorating in 2023.  To see the rest of the winners and honorable mention recipients, and for more information on IMDA and its mission to advance the in-mold industry, visit https://imdassociation.com.

    Best Use of IML

Romano Classic Body Cream 470ml & Arthur Ford Body Cream

Submitted By: Ren-Flex Packaging South Africa
Brand Owner: Canway Supply Chain Solutions
    Molder: Teqal
Label Supplier: Ren-Flex Packaging South Africa
In this application, the label film is laminated with printed foil and varnished. No static was required in the mold. The label is bent around a radiused base and upper edge, giving a borderless look. Since the print is applied on top of the foil, there’s flexibility in providing the option of full or partial coverage. And, the product is hot filled. The textured label finish – sort of an orange peel effect – adds to the premium look and feel.

Best Use of IML/IMD in an Innovative Application

    Apple Fiber Container
    Submitted By: MCC Verstraete
    Brand Owner: Ela’s Apples
    Molder: TekPak
    Label Supplier: MCC Verstraete
Ela’s Apples is an organic, sustainable brand, and it wanted to offer its apples in the most sustainable packaging possible. Apple skins and wood fiber were used to develop a special fiber blend for its containers, and then molded fiber labeling was used for the decoration. These containers are not only mono-material but also 100% recyclable, biodegradable,
    and compostable.

Best Use of IMD for In-House Promotion or Prototype

    Spacewood
    Submitted By: Kurz
    Brand Owner: Kurz
    Molder: Kurz
Spacewood naturals offer a sustainable solution to high-quality interior designs, using natural wood structures, patterns and textures. The surface is designed to feel like real wood, adding that tactile element. Backlighting adds more visual appeal, giving the part an orange glow like liquid lava. Spacewood naturals replicate the real look and structure of wood types with recycled plastic material.

Best Use of IML – Blow Mold Application

    Gemini 5 Litre Jar
Submitted By: Cargill India Pvt. Ltd.
Brand Owner: Cargill India Pvt. Ltd.
    Molder: Organic Industries
    Label Supplier: Coats & Pack
This IML application was utilized to eliminate a PS label application that resulted in peeling off, lifting off, greased stained labels of the oils contained within the molded can. Utilizing IML eliminated the need for a separate labeling process, which improved the efficiency of the packing line while reducing the weight of the container. Now, the brand owner isn’t worried about label wrinkling or grease staining.
