Avery Dennison tackles newest trends in beauty and personal care labeling

Discerning consumers have led the charge for more environmentally friendly packaging materials.

Avery Dennison tackles newest trends in beauty and personal care labeling
    Greg Hrinya, Editor06.24.22
Beauty and personal care labels have historically featured some of the most innovative packaging solutions. With extraordinarily crowded shelves, the emphasis on design and embellishment has been key in catching the consumer’s eye.

The demand for labels and packaging in this market has been a mixed bag recently, though. For example, demand has surged for personal care products over the last several years as consumers have become more cognizant of good hygiene. This has correlated directly to the purchasing hand sanitizer, household cleaning items, soaps and more.

During the pandemic, however, fewer people were leaving their homes, leading to a drop in interest for beauty products. “We have seen a slight decline in beauty products due to the pandemic,” says Chrissy Vargo, product manager, conformable films, Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials. “This is being caused by consumers shifting their focus to personal health and wellness.”

As society continues to return to some semblance of normalcy, there is an expectation for growth in the beauty space. Interest in personal care will remain strong, so it is important to understand the latest trends here. According to Avery Dennison, sustainability is one of the key drivers in the beauty and personal care space. As brands strive to meet consumer demand for more environmentally friendly packaging, the label has the potential to be a real asset in that quest – especially as many brands establish lofty sustainability goals for 2025 and beyond.

“The label can help communicate to consumers how their product impacts the environment, educate the consumer on how to recycle their product and help enable the recycling of the container,” comments Vargo. “Consumers are becoming more mindful of the impact their purchases and behavior have on the planet. As a result, they will support businesses that promote circular models aimed to reduce, reuse and recycle.”

Since consumers are more mindful than ever about their purchases, sustainability will continue to grow in importance. In a popular market, such as beauty and personal care, the labels and packaging will increasingly consist of recycled materials and feature recycling-friendly options.

In addition to sustainability, smart technology has the ability to really make an impact in this market. “Technology in packaging is on the rise as consumers seek security, information, emotional engagement, entertainment and convenience,” explains Vargo. “This will involve things like QR codes for information on the product or RFID technology.  This is where we see the future of packaging going.  The idea of ‘Connected Shopping.’”

When perusing crowded shelves, aesthetics will, of course, play a role. Perhaps the biggest trend will include the no-label look, providing a window into the product. “Consumers enjoy seeing the product in the container before purchasing.  Due to this, there has been a push for clarity in labels, specifically clear film labels,” adds Vargo.

Avery Dennison has developed a wide range of labeling products range for beauty and personal care labels and packaging. Depending on the substrate or container on which the label is applied, the company has engineered products for rigid, semi-squeeze and full squeeze applications.

The newest products range from adhesives to films. Global MDO Next Generation Clear is Avery Dennison’s newest semi-squeeze film, which features an enhanced print surface and better clarity. Meanwhile, the CleanFlake adhesive has been designed to adhere the label to a PET bottle until the cohesive bond is broken at the recycler.

“Our TC-2000 topcoat features Avery Dennison’s unique technology that enables an especially strong bond between the film and inks,” explains Vargo. “Superior ink adhesion also means clearer, bolder graphics and increased shelf appeal. Avery Dennison TC-2000 works beautifully with a wide range of printing techniques, including UV flexo, UV inkjet, water-based flexo and more.”

Avery Dennison’s products have been recognized for their sustainable attributes, as well. APR recognition for HDPE recycling provides brands serving the personal care and beauty space with validation that the labels stay with the container without impacting the recycling process.

Avery Dennison offers a dedicated support staff to meet challenges head-on in this sector, too. Typical challenges can often be found when the right label or adhesive are not selected.  The shape of the container and amount of squeeze needed will drive the level of conformability required. From the adhesive side, the type of container drives which adhesive will properly promote label adhesion.
