The Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute (TLMI) has granted acpo, a self-wound overlaminates manufacturer, LIFE certification. Project LIFE (Label Initiative for the Environment) provides auditable metrics focusing on the reduction of a company’s environmental footprint.
The LIFE scorecard and auditing process covers 31 metrics in four categories: clean production techniques, energy and greenhouse gases, product design and management practices. NSF International, an accredited third party certification company, performed the assessment over two days.
“We are pleased to join those companies previously committed to sustainability,” says Jack Mitchell, director of sales and marketing at acpo. “Project LIFE will help acpo elevate the environmental consciousness of our company. Being a manufacturer of self-wound overlaminates with water-based adhesives, acpo has already made a commitment to ecologically-sound processes that minimize negative environmental impacts. We will utilize this tool as another component in our continuous improvement efforts.”
TLMI created the LIFE program in order to offer an audited certification process tailored specifically to the narrow web printing and converting industry. In undergoing the LIFE certification process, elements adressed include the recyclability of adhesives, the source and destination of liner materials and how narrow web companies are driving recycling programs for these materials and material construction light-weighting (adopting thinner constructions that generate less waste).
Front office issues, such as total energy utilization, the energy’s source and what a business is doing to actively reduce its overall carbon footprint, are also addressed.
