I love how the working world collectively unwinds over the summer months. And I’m especially envious of how the Europeans do it. We North Americans should emulate what they do across the pond when it comes to “taking a holiday.” It seems that during the dog days of August, whenever I email someone in Europe I get an “out-of-office” bounce back, where the recipient is on holiday and not returning for a few weeks. Weeks!
It must be nice. I’m jealous, and I also get frustrated. You see, for me, in my line of work, the end of summer can only be oh-so-relaxing, particularly in odd number years, like this one – 2019. Why? Well because it’s a Labelexpo Europe year, silly!
The Brussels event is the biggest of the big label shows, and covering it online and in the pages of L&NW is quite labor-intensive.
The work for us has already begun. Each year, we kick off our show coverage in the July/August issue with the first of two Labelexpo Product Previews that we publish. It starts on page 72, and what follows are several pages of a sneak peek at what exhibitors will be showcasing in Brussels.
My job, and that of L&NW’s indispensible associate editor Greg Hrinya, is to get the lowdown on what exhibitors have in store for the event. We report on it now, during and after the show. In the weeks leading up to Labelexpo, we reach out to both the biggest names in the label industry, as well as the smaller niche players. Have a look at the Product Preview and see what piques your interest. You may even decide to book a plane ticket.
Making matters even more interesting is that prior to Labelexpo, many from the North American label market will head to Chicago in September for the TLMI printTHINK summit. Needless to say, it’s a busy month. And if you know publishing, you’ll understand that the bulk of our work gets done in the days and weeks leading up to the frenzy that will be September, 2019.
But I wouldn’t have it any other way. The label industry is exciting and vibrant. You might even say labels are “hot” right now. Our M&A expert certainly thinks so, and so much so we felt compelled to make it our cover story. (Details start on page 56!)
So for now, relax and get some sun, enjoy your holiday, and I’ll see you in September.
