The previous year was a mixed bag for label printers and suppliers. Success levels during the COVID-19 pandemic were often dictated by markets served. Those distributing products for the food, beverage, and health and personal care industries were likely overrun with work, while some converters went months without seeing an order for certain end uses (automotive, for example). Substrate suppliers were taxed to the max, and press providers saw less consistency.
While it is certainly a relief to have 2020 in the rearview mirror, the flipping of a calendar page does not magically cure all of our ills. This global crisis is still a reality, and it will likely continue that way for the immediate future.
There is hope, however, for a more promising 2021. Viable vaccine developments, increased availability of COVID-19 testing and contact tracing, and improved therapeutic treatments are all advancements worth noting. Event organizers are also bullish on in-person gatherings this year. Labelexpo has events lined up in Rosemont, IL, USA and Brussels, Belgium, and the FTA recently announced plans for Forum and INFOFLEX. Dscoop is mixing the best of both worlds, with a hybrid event planned for May.
However, this does not mean a return to business as usual. Optimism for the future cannot replace diligence in the present. In the meantime, we must all adhere to local guidelines, which include masks, social distancing, and proper hygiene. Any event will likely include countless hand sanitizing stations, as well as wider aisles. Acknowledging the efficacy of these practices is no small feat, either.
Even though the US continues to grapple with inconsistent adherence to CDC guidelines, other countries have made significant headway. As is covered in our Industry Events section (page 71), the inaugural edition of Labelexpo South China took place from December 8-10. The Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center welcomed 8,778 visitors as they met with more than 130 exhibitors.
Kevin Liu, event director for Labelexpo South China 2020, emphasized, “The show is resounding proof that it’s possible to launch and run a successful, high-quality event safely in these challenging times.”
Our ability to break bread with one another again is contingent upon our follow-through to a wide variety of health mandates. Returning to these events is not an impossibility, as evidenced by South China. Events may look and feel different in 2021, but there is at least the prospect of having them. Given that the label and packaging industry is fueled by networking and relationships, I hope that I can join you out on the road again this coming year.
