In a recent discussion with Thomas Dahbura, president of Hub Labels, he aptly described this as “a weird time” for the industry. The obstacles presented during the pandemic have evolved into considerable supply chain challenges. Demand remains high, but procuring raw materials has become more strenuous than ever. And it’s entirely possible that the experiences of one label converter might starkly contrast with those of their neighbors, especially with the recent material allocation occurring with vendors. Prior predicaments have not gone away, either. Staffing remains a key issue, and economic concerns – namely inflation – have only muddied the waters further.
As the manufacturing industry continues to grapple with these realities, the return to Labelexpo Americas could not have come at a better time. While it may be hard to believe, this is the first iteration of the popular tradeshow in four years. A lot has happened since 2018, and much will continue to unfold in the coming years.
Labelexpo Americas presents a unique opportunity for all involved in the industry. For many converters, the event represents a first chance to get a hands-on feel for the newest technologies. From digital printing to inspection to turret rewinding, any number of label converting technologies have grown by leaps and bounds. Faster speeds and greater automation have become hallmarks of the newest products on today’s market. In fact, a popular slogan for many suppliers is, “Doing more with less.” As some converters deal with diminishing retention rates, the ability to rely on technology is more powerful than ever.
The return to Rosemont also presents valuable networking time, a chance for peers to reconnect and discuss best practices. With so much uncertainty on the horizon, converters will actively brainstorm contingency plans and how to navigate their businesses.
“I’m looking forward to seeing everybody again and getting a look at the new technology,” Dahbura states. “We’re going to the show to look at a couple things, with one at the forefront being 100% web inspection.”
In the pages that follow, we present a comprehensive guide to enhance your Labelexpo experience. In addition to our in-depth Labelexpo Americas Product Preview (page 82), we lay out the state of the North American label market on page 58. From trials and tribulations to the latest data and trends, we set the stage for what to consider as you’re walking the halls of the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center from September 13-15.
Despite all the challenges we have and will continue to outline, this is still a great time to be in the label business. “The North American label market is still showing its teeth,” comments Paul Teachout of Anderson & Vreeland. “With all the current challenges of supply chain and pricing pressures, converters are still maintaining growth and profitability.”
We hope you’ll continue to explore it with us when we meet in Rosemont.
