Epson put in its first appearance at Labelexpo with a prototype of a digital inkjet printer with a 13" web and capable of printing CMYK using high density pigments in an aqueous solution. The unit, which currently is called Epson Digital Label Press, is still about a year away from commercial launch, according to Marc Tinkler, senior business development manager.
The printer features 17 print heads and prints and frame on the web that is 13" by 36" in area. The heads make multiple passes to improve resolution before the web moves on for printing of the next frame. The effective web speed is about 33' (10m) per minute.
