When looking for inspiration for their new labels, Le Pich winemakers needed to look no further than their own backyard. Le Pich is so named after the Wappo Indian term for “golden eagle,” two of which can be found on the winery property. Created by Collotype Labels USA, the wine and spirit arm of Multi-Color Corporation, the Le Pich 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon label is this year’s Best of Show winner. This year’s Innovator Award (North America) went to Whitlam Label for its Evidence Bag label, which was created to control and document when the bag is opened. Schreiner Group of Germany was presented the Innovator Award (International) for its Pharma-Comb Void label.
Hundreds of entries were submitted for this year’s competition. A total of 48 first place awards were presented, including 35 for North American converters and 13 for international converters. Twenty-five second place awards were given, two of which were given to international converters.
McDowell Label & Screen Printing won a total of nine first place awards and six second place awards. Multi-Color also won a total of nine awards – four of which were first place – while Collotype Labels (acquired by Multi-Color in 2008) won eight first place and three second place awards. Additionally, TAPP Label Technologies, Inc. won three first place prizes and one second place.
The judging committee, chaired by Steve Lee of RotoMetrics, included Mike Buystedt of Flint Group Narrow Web; J. Whitlam Label Company
Product: Evidence Bag
Description/Challenges: The customer manufactures evidence bags and their customer asked for them to come up with a way to help control and document when the evidence bag was opened. When opened, they wanted to track who opened it and what for. What Whitlam developed was a label that can be applied before cutting open the evidence bag/box that tracks all proper information required. The user breaks the zipper seal to have an area to cut and enter the bag. Once complete, they remove the liner material and the bag is sealed and the chain of custody remains intact. The challenge was providing a label that could be applied, opened, then resealed and ensure that proper chain of custody for evidence was maintained. This included printing on both layers PS and diecutting just the top layer to create the zipper pull stripe.

Kopco Graphics Inc.
Product: Multi Cat Premium Clay Litter Disposable Pan
Description/Challenges: There was quite a bit of R&D that went into the development and design of this label. Kopco had to determine what type of pressure sensitive adhesive would bond to a small surface area around the top rim of the litter pan. There was quite a bit of trial and error that went into this project to determine why the labels were popping off the edges in different areas on the top of the pan. It was finally determined that the clay litter in the pan was gassing out, causing the seal of the label to fail. Kopco then redesigned the top cutting die with three small air-eject holes per repeat to allow gas to escape. This provided a solid functional solution to the customer's packaging needs. The label has a total of eight colors plus UV overprint coating and four rotary cutting tools. Keeping good registration was critical and difficult to maintain.
