Entry: Girl & Dragon, 2013 Malbec Argentina
Description/Challenges: Flexo, CMYK, hot foil stamping, rotary silkscreen and rotary embossing.
End Use: Wine label
Collotype Labels USA takes the top prize in the 2014 TLMI Label Awards for its Girl & Dragon, 2013 Malbec Argentina wine label. The Napa, California converter received five First Place awards overall, a Second Place prize, while also securing two Best of Class honors. Six entries were given the Best of Class distinction. In addition to Collotype Labels USA, Best of Class winners are ASL Print FX, Hammer Packaging Corp., TVC Label, and also Collotype Labels Digital Department.
This year's competition saw hundreds of entries from around the globe and awarded a combined 60 First and Second place honors for the North American and International divisions. Entry submission origins spanned the globe, coming from throughout the USA and Europe, and as far away as China and Australia.
The judging committee, chaired by Paul Teachout of Nilpeter USA, included Mike Buystedt, Flint Group Narrow Web; J. Page Crouch, Clemson University; Robert Wray, Gallus; Steve Schulte, Mark Andy; Jim Harris, Actega WIT; Ray Mackura, Avery Dennison Fasson Roll North America; Mike Rivera, K Laser Technology; Dilip Shad, Nilpeter; Kent Wolford, Domino Amjet; and Richard Black, All Printing Resources.

Entry: Freakshow, 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon
Description/Challenges: The label was challenging as the client wanted colors to depict their vision of a circus. Also, the unusually large size required increased precision over a larger surface area. The high number of processes required to register also presented challenges.

Description/Challenges: A custom die was needed to accommodate Sparrow Lane’s existing glass bottle packaging. Electronic art files were modified to meet the needs of the printing process – the labels were printed digitally with CMYK + white inks on bright silver paper.
End Use: Sparrow Lane Cabernet Sauvignon Vinegar is a product of the food industry, categorized as a fine wine vinegar.

Description/Challenges: Challenges included multiple variable data files with several prize codes and specific matching code numbers. Special programming was required to ensure that multiple variable data fields corresponded correctly to the prize level graphic.
End Use: Food & Beverage promotional necker that attaches to bottle of Beringer wine.

Description/Challenges: The customer required extremely tight application tolerances, so diecutting and slitting required tight controls. A trim and perf diecut system was used to prevent movement.

Description/Challenges: This label utilizes a variety of different features to create its character. Four-color process is used to accent the graphic. Rotary screen white draws subtle attention to the head and foot of the label while adding opacity to the background inks.

Description/Challenges: This was a special project to match the look of an old-time whisky flask bottle. The cap and neck seal were printed with flexo, and then flipped and a UV matte varnish was applied with reverse print to create a gloss.

Description/Challenges: The Coors Light Win a VIP Silver Seat Experience was a one-of-a-kind project. The labels were meant to adhere to the outside of the Coors Light beer boxes for a sweepstakes to win VIP Seats to a famous sports event, so color matching was a challenge.
