European support
for latest narrow web entrant
At one time Webtron was a major player in the narrow web flexo press sector. It certainly helped the process to become established in many parts of Europe from the late 1980s. As elsewhere, it lost market share to more aggressive competitors and looked as though it could disappear completely, at least in European markets. Therefore, there was much interest among owners of Webtron presses when they heard that Paper Converting Machine Co. of Green Bay, WI, had acquired the intellectual property rights in 2001 from Chromas, part of the Didde Group, to build Webtron presses (as well as ZigZag carton presses).
The latest development is the launch of the PC In-line Systems division in Europe. It has appointed Tim Hilton as European sales manager, based at PCMC’s regional sales office in Oldham in Lancashire. The principal label press is a new offering, badged as the X-10, but effectively it’s a 10" version of the Webtron 650/750 models. Besides being wider, the company says the X-10 has a more rigid frame, increased drying capacity and an improved drive arrangement. The short web path and cantilevered design remain.
For the flexible packaging market, the company offers the Evolution in widths of 18", 22" and 26" with full servo-driven technology for multi substrate capability. Its innovative Deck x 2 two-color flexo print heads use a single common impression cylinder that operates in-line between two color decks to give an extremely short web path.
