Phoenix Challenge set
for May of 2004
The Phoenix Challenge Foundation recently announced the dates for the seventh annual Phoenix Challenge High School Flexography Competition. Students from throughout the United States and Canada will compete in the international competition on March 18-19, 2004, at the Harper National Flexographic Center at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC. A total of 32 high school students participated in the 2003 Phoenix Challenge from schools located in Asheville, NC; Charlotte; Columbia, SC; Holland, MI; Mississauga, ON; Rock Hill, SC; Teterboro, NJ; Williamston, SC; Winnsboro, SC and York, PA. Organizers expect 40 percent more participants next year.
The two-day competition tests students’ flexo skills in prepress, plate making, written knowledge and printing on press. This year a math test was added to the competition. The winning team leaves with thousands of dollars in scholarship money along with a trophy to display at the school for one year.
The Phoenix Challenge exists solely through donations made by the flexographic industry to cover operating expenses, scholarship money, and expenses for the schools. Major sponsors of the 2003 competition included All Printing Resources, Mark Andy, Anderson & Vreeland, Parks Printing, Anagram, PICA (Printing Industries of the Carolina), Benton Graphics, Raflatac, Cage Graphics, Southern Graphics, DuPont, The Charlotte Observer, Econo Products, Harper Corporation of America, Jet USA, Krafft Printing Systems, and Water Ink Technologies.
