New factory planned for an expanding CCL Label, Leeds
Toronto based CCL Label Division has unlocked more investment funds for CCL Label of Leeds, bought from Jarvis Porter in 2002. It recently announced the building of a new factory on a greenfield site, which will double CCL’s existing factory space in Leeds city center to 65,662 square feet by January 2005. The new premises in nearby Castleford, West Yorkshire, form part of a $9.15 million project and benefit from improved motorway links.
CCL in Leeds has more than 100 employees and produces labels and packaging for the personal care, household cleaners, beverage, agro-chemical, garden products and pharmaceutical markets. The company boosted its capacity in January by installing a fourth Nilpeter MO-3300 offset based combination press. (Two identical presses are operating at CCL’s Paris operation, while five — two of which are on order — are in CCL plants in the USA and two are in the Far East.)
The new press in Leeds has eight interchangeable offset/UV-flexo/rotary screen stations. It was also supplied with Nilpeter’s recently introduced gravure cassette module. Using laser-engraved sleeves, this module allows the company to print metallic ink on personal care and beverage labels. CCL is also focused on supplying the household cleaning, beverage and food markets. Clear or opaque film laminates are used for about 85 percent of the total label output.
Stuart Lang, president of CCL Label, Europe — and based in Leeds — says: “In Europe we have standardized our buying of film, plates, screens and inks to allow interchangeable print capacity throughout all our plants. It aligns with the growing trend towards the single-source buying of labels and packaging materials by international brand owners.”
