Milk label specialist installs two more Nilpeter presses
The Europe-wide market for self-adhesive paper or filmic labels for polyethylene milk bottles in various sizes and shapes continues to grow. To meet this expansion, LPS Bridgewater in Somerset, southwest England, is installing two US-built Nilpeter FB-3300 flexo label presses. The company supplies labels to some 60 independent dairies which supply the major supermarket chains. Milk labels make up around 80 percent of a company turnover set to reach around $10 million in its next financial year.
The first of the 13" eight-color presses came on-line in April; the second is expected in October. Many milk labels now require process color and spot colors, so both presses are configured with seven water based flexo units with hot air dryers and an eighth UV flexo unit for varnishing. A turn bar and delaminator allow reverse-side printing of promotional or seasonal messages. About 15 percent of output involves clear-on-clear filmic laminates, typically using 60-micron polypropylene facestocks. Accordingly, the first press is fitted with an optional film printing package.
LPS Bridgewater is a privately-owned company with 26 employees. The pressroom comprises a six- and an eight-color 13" Roto Press 3513 (the FB-3300 is the redesigned and rebadged version) and two six-color Mark Andy 7" presses. The FB-3300s are fitted with twin-roll turret rewinders for non-stop production at over 500 feet per minute on a 24-hour, four-day basis. Each press produces up to three million milk labels every working day.
