Labelexpo Europe 2023 – the last to take place in Brussels for the foreseeable future – will be a landmark show for the future direction of the global label and package printing industry. Across four days and nine halls, more than 600 suppliers will launch never-before-seen products and technologies. What follows is a look at what visitors will see in Belgium in September.

A B Graphic International (ABG) will unveil its automation advancements and showcase its latest product innovations. The primary focus will be its new automation technology, ABG Connect, and showcasing the company’s latest products. ABG Connect is an automated workflow solution that streamlines the print and finishing process by connecting all stages into one automated workflow. ABG will also showcase its latest product launches, which will include advancements in non-stop winding technology and the new turret rewinder model. They will also introduce the Converter – a new, fully modular converting line that boasts higher speeds, new flexo technology and a smaller footprint. Other products include a Digicon with screen and Ecoleaf unit for sustainable foiling, DigiLase 4.0, DigiJet 330, DigiLite, SRI3 430 with monochrome inkjet, shrink sleeve seaming, doctoring solutions and an entry-level SRI. ABG’s booth will also feature a booklet module and partner Maan Engineering’s module for laminate and linerless label solutions.

ACTEGA’S specialty inks and coatings for labels and pouches have been developed with advanced functionality and stand-out shelf appeal in mind. The range of haptic and visual effect coatings offer brands a way to differentiate their products with a variety of high-value effects designed to capture consumer attention. The effects made possible include soft touch, matte and raised image. Asahi Photoproducts will be introducing its updated AWP wastewater recycling unit for use with the AWP plate processing system. The Asahi Photoproducts water-washable AWP-DEW CleanPrint flexographic plates have been certified carbon neutral by the Carbon Trust. In addition, to increase sustainability of its platemaking systems even more, Asahi has developed this water recycling system for the AWP plate processing equipment. The unit features proprietary filtering technology developed by Asahi Kasei that reduces wastewater by 75% and detergent usage by 40%. In a 10-hour-per-day plate processing operation, the system can process plates of up to 38 square meters (410 square feet). This further increases sustainability in flexographic operations. This filtering technology, under the brand Microza, is Asahi Kasei’s hollow fiber membrane separation technology that delivers advanced water treatment capability, as well as a wide range of uses in other industrial processes.

Ashe continues to grow its general range of slitter rewinders/turret slitters, and it will show – for the first time to the label industry – its Diamond Duplex slitter series for wider web applications. Another launch of the machine series is the Opal TST range – high speed blank label converter with Auto 2 spindle turret rewind. This is an entry level investment for high speed, fast turnaround reel form blank label production. Operating also on the stand will be a fully automated “Glue-less/Core-less” 4 spindle turret slitter, an Opal ISR with 100% camera inspection and a mid web sized (800mm wide) Solitaire Duplex slitter for flexible packaging products. Parkland – a supply partner for Ashe – will be launching and demonstrating its i30 multi-purpose Core Cutter, enabling various core ID sizes to be cut to length, quickly and simply. All machines will be fully operational to view on the stand during the show.

Under the motto “Simplifying label production,” Bobst will be demonstrating its innovation in labels and flexible packaging production with two main production lines in focus. The company is spearheading digitalization, automation, connectivity and sustainability in packaging production with a portfolio that includes flexo, digital and All-in-One presses for a wide variety of applications. The Bobst Digital Master 340 All-in-One modular and upgradable label press, equipped with the latest UV inkjet technology, will be running live at 100 m/m. Visitors will be able to see how Bobst’s Accucheck system, which comes as standard on this machine, performs 100% inline quality control at full speed. The full configuration will also include flexo modules and a highly automated diecutting unit to showcase true end-to-end label production.

Dantex will showcase its PicoJet technology, a digital inkjet press range hailed by the company as groundbreaking in innovation and design. First revealed at Labelexpo Americas 2022, the PicoJet range offers a host of features, such as user-friendly PicoCenter and PicoPilot software with touchscreen interfaces; enhanced print quality and performance even at high speeds; and innovations such as SuperText, SuperWhite, and DecoTactile technologies, which seamlessly integrate with a choice of finishing solutions for end-to-end label production. PicoJet is a true hybrid press and can be configured reel-to-reel or with a range of inline finishing capabilities. Users can also choose to add white with 92% opacity in a single pass at speeds up to 75 m/m. This is integral to the creation of a range of tactile finishes and textures, additional color stations – orange/green/violet, as well as SuperText – an ultra-fine print capable of producing 2pt text at high speeds.

Delta ModTech will show on-demand converting demonstrations on its newly updated Crusader Converter. This system will showcase a precision RFID antennae placement application. It will feature a variety of processes, including rotary diecutting, winding, conveying and precise part placement. Labelexpo Europe is an ideal opportunity to witness the versatility of the Crusader Converter. This specific demo will showcase RFID antennae placement. However, this is just one of the processes that the Crusader is capable of through Delta ModTech’s modular technology. Additional equipment capabilities include options such as laser diecutting, multi-layer lamination, heat-seal pouching, coating and drying. All of these capabilities have helped position Delta at the top of the narrow web converting industry.

Domino will be showcasing the N730i digital UV inkjet label press along with the K600i variable data printer integrated with the new K300 high resolution inkjet. Deemed as one of the latest global technology advancements, the N730i digital UV inkjet label press prints at 1200 dpi with BITSTAR printhead technology. It is configurable in up to seven colors (CMYKOVW) and can achieve up to 92% of the Pantone color range. It has an optional flexo priming station (pre-digital), which can be retrofitted to optimize print quality on more difficult media types. An optional flexo station (post-digital) can be retrofitted to support varnishing, a brand spot color, or flood white for shrink sleeve applications. The K600i allows variable data printing at up to 492 fpm and the ability to print serial, batch, random, or PINs; alphanumeric characters; variable images; linear barcodes; 2D matrix, or QR codes. In addition, the latest digital technology will be printed at the Domino booth, with the unveiling of real-time online ripping also taking place.

Durst is set to introduce Durst Hawk Eye technology at Labelexpo Europe 2023. This technology, which utilizes computer vision and artificial intelligence, will assist operators and automate print quality. Additionally, it significantly reduces setup time and waste, resulting in enhanced efficiency and an even more competitive total cost of ownership (TCO) for the Tau RSC platform printers. Also, Durst will unveil the next generation of the Tau RSC UV ink set. This new ink set, available in the colors CMYKOVG and white, meets the latest regulatory requirements and expands converters’ application range even further. On the showfloor, alongside a new digital printing press, the Tau 510 RSCi will be showcased. Equipped with the new double white feature, this press will demonstrate its capabilities in real-time, printing at a speed of 100 m/m at a printing width of 510mm, leading productivity of over 3,000 square meters per hour.

To support the label industry in its transition to a more sustainable footprint and the conversion to UV LED curing, Elkem is introducing new UV LED curable silicone solutions, Silcolease UV LED Series. UV LED technology has emerged as a promising method for radiation curing silicone chemistries at specific wavelengths as an alternative to mercury vapor curing lamps. In addition to its effectiveness and flexilbility compared to standard mercury lamps, UV LED provides the benefit of improved sustainability by consuming less energy and the elimination of greenhouse gas produced. Silcolease UV LED systems utilizing Elkem photoinitiator demonstrate excellent cure and physical proporties for more sustainable release coatings.

At Labelexpo Europe 2023, Gallus, a subsidiary of Heidelberg, will celebrate 100 years in business, as well as the opening of its landmark facility, the Gallus Experience Center. It will showcase digital solutions developed with its parent company to support increased automation of the entire ecosystem. The objective of these solutions is to facilitate “Smart, Connected, Printing” to support skilled labor shortages, increase productivity and reduce waste. The company will also show the Gallus One digital label press. Built on the established Gallus Labelmaster press platform, Gallus One is a 340mm wide roll-to-roll UV inkjet digital inline label press. It utilizes a host of features to achieve high levels of automation and press efficiency, with UV inkjet print quality and stand-out print speeds of up to 70 m/m.

As a market leader with the largest installed-base and the widest portfolio of digital presses, HP Indigo is showcasing end-to-end digital production at Labelexpo. With the first presentation in Europe, both the HP Indigo V12 digital press and the recently-launched HP Indigo 200K digital press will be demonstrating digital efficiency, sustainability and profitability for the labels and packaging industry. Alongside the HP Indigo 6K digital press, converters will be able to learn how Indigo’s LEP and LEPX technologies can help them grow their business. The V12 digital press ensures non-stop production and earning power; while the company says the HP Indigo 200K digital press delivers a 30% percent improvement in speed and 45% increase in productivity, opening the door to more flexible packaging converters who want to enter the digital market. The HP Indigo 6K is a versatile press offering E2E solutions.

Hybrid Software will be demonstrating enhancements to the Packz and Stepz PDF editors for prepress and the Cloudflow modular production workflow suite for file processing, asset management, soft proofing and workflow automation. The newest features of Packz include Advanced Color: Analyze & Fix for intelligent production estimation, which provides a snapshot of printed artwork under various printing conditions, including different spot color strategies. The feature is designed to help label and packaging producers accurately reproduce brand colors using the fewest possible spot colors and therefore the lowest production cost. Other recent developments include Content XML for dynamic content creation using standard markup language, step and repeat for complex label production, and Packzimizer for intelligent ganging of labels, including sheetfed and flexibles.

Karlville Swiss will present as part of the Digital Pouch Factory inside the HP Indigo booth, the latest generation of the compact KS-SUP-400 pouch machine. According to Karlville Swiss, the machine has the fastest setup in the industry, with very little startup scraps, and high production speed, resulting in the optimal pouch machine fit for both very minimum pouch quantity and long run production orders. During the show, it will showcase, for the first time live, the possibility to manufacture short-run custom shaped pouches with an innovative toolless system. Karlville Swiss wants to redraw once again the perimeters of sustainability in the pouch production process, with a cutting-edge machine in terms of low operating costs and consumption, limited footprint and low material dispersion.

Kocher+Beck will have an interactive section at its Labelexpo Europe 2023 booth, which has been built using sustainable materials and will be reused over several shows in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint. The GapMaster EM (Electronic Move) will be the product highlight. Introducing a servo-driven system, it is touted as the only system to offer both adjustments by a rotary dial and digital input with haptic feedback for the operator. From TecScreen, advancements have been made to the ever-popular processing unit. The unit now has the function to store and recycle water, another example of strides toward sustainability. For flexible dies, a new generation of anti-stick coating provides a non-stick result with less adhesive residue on the cutting edges. The new coating is certified in all applications such as pharma/medical applications (FDA certified) and is environmentally compliant.

LemuGroup will present three machines for label roll manufacturing and digital embellishment: LI 220 RFID, MA 350+GTU and GTU 440 with a boxing system. GTU-440 with a boxing system is a high productivity, non-stop machine with a rewinding speed up to 250 m/m. It is a machine that can produce label rolls and packages. A fully automatic machine from start to finish, its integrated inspection system guarantees the quality of all rolls that are packed and boxed. LI 220 offers two operational alternatives in a single module. It enables the production of multi-layer labels and also allows NFC/RFID chip inserts, between the liner and the label, without hindering the visual design of the label. Meanwhile, the MA 350+ connected to a GBS turret is a competitive combination for the production of premium, digitally finished labels, perfect for the wine, cosmetics or pharmaceutical markets, the company says.

Making its world premiere at the Mark Andy booth will be the PRO Series, the new platform of fully servo-driven presses that delivers modern technology at a competitive price. PRO Series is also the flexo platform for Digital PRO Max, a toner-based digital press with a low cost to print and exceptional white. Rounding out the Mark Andy press offering is its top-of-the-range hybrid press, the Digital Series HD, featuring a combination of Mark Andy’s flexo print stations and a UV inkjet engine. Mark Andy has embraced the evolution to automation, and it will be on full display in Brussels. Premiering at Labelexpo is ProWORX Label Suite, an exclusive imposition tool. This new software streamlines and automates label production setup, including inline printing and embellishment processes. ProWORX Label Suite is an Adobe Creative Cloud extension tailored to Mark Andy’s hybrid presses. It provides job defining and imposition for printing and post-processing, including diecutting, and allows for more efficient and sustainable label production.

Martin Automatic will showcase its latest space-saving technology in Brussels. On display will be two of its most popular machines in the narrow web sector, an MBS automatic unwind butt splicer and an LRD transfer rewinder. Both machines have been sold to German label printer Krämer Druck and will be delivered and installed directly after Labelexpo closes. Creative use of the vertical festoon on the butt splicer and a proprietary roll unloading feature at the rewind save Krämer Druck nearly one meter of overall space in the running direction. Furthermore, these machines can be installed directly against walls at either end of the press and still allow access for maintenance and roll loading and unloading, without the use of carts.

Meech will be exhibiting, for the first time, the Hyperion 650QAC, a high accuracy ionizing bar designed for ESD sensitive applications where static charges need to be controlled at very low levels. The titanium emitter pins are driven by a Quasi AC (QAC) high voltage waveform that generates positive and negative ions from each pin. This is vital for the delivery of rapid charge decay with near-zero residual voltage on the object being neutralized, which reduces the risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD). Intended for use at operating distances between 50 and 400mm and including a built-in keypad for setting different configurations, the 650QAC is ideal for applications where ESD may damage electrical components. This includes RFID tag manufacturing, where static charges are generated during the unwinding, printing, drying and rewinding processes and stored in the metallic antennae.

Three key words encapsulate the essence of the new Jupiter TCWM model: safety, defect-free quality, and modularity. “Usually control tables are monolithic machines,” explains Bertrand Ayum Inyang, Prati mechanical designer. “As indeed was the previous TCW model. With Jupiter TCWM, on the other hand, we were able to switch from a monolithic structure to a fully modular one. And the horizontal development of the material flow helped us in the redesign. The complete modularity also allows us to offer our customers a machine that is fully configurable, while retaining all the advantages of standardizing individual modules in terms of repeatability and quality.”

RK PrintCoat Instruments, prepress color communication specialists, will be showcasing its innovative and award-winning FlexiProof 100 machine incorporating a custom-designed UV LED unit, an alternative to the dichroic mercury arc vapor lamps currently provided. The main components of this machine are identical to a standard flexographic press. FlexiProof 100 utilizes a doctored ceramic anilox roller and a photopolymer plate, and, with a maximum speed of 100 m/m, realistic printability testing can be undertaken on all types of flexo substrates. RK will also be showcasing its VCML Pilot coater; a reel-to-reel machine developed for printing, coating, and laminating for R&D, product development and quality control. Available in basic inspection/rewinding configurations, Rotocontrol machines can also be fitted with numerous modules, either at order or later in the field for enhanced capabilities such as integrated vision inspection, semi-automatic turrets, as well as multiple slitting, counting and product detection methods. Advanced machines for finishing with full insetting/registration control, single pass re-inspection (security applications), in-mold label, booklet insertion, cold and hot foil, and flexo overprinting are also Rotocontrol’s expertise.

The collaboration showcases a third generation press that combines Screen’s SAI inkjet digital printing technology with Nilpeter’s FA-Line flexo platform, delivering stable and high-quality combination printing. This end-to-end solution enables efficient production of value-added labels with expanded gamut printing and white imprinting capabilities.Additionally, Screen is introducing an inline digital primer prototype for the Truepress L350UV SAI digital label press. This feature addresses the challenge of poor ink adhesion on various substrates by incorporating a digital primer directly into the press. The solution could deliver superior ink adhesion and better print quality. Finally, Screen will also showcase the Truepress PAC520P inkjet press for paper packaging, responding to the growing trend of replacing plastic packaging with environmentally-friendly paper alternatives. This high-speed, water-based inkjet press offers label converters seamless entry into the profitable flexible packaging market.

Plus, a sheetfed device, the Duoblade FX, will show robust performance by Perfect-Cut algorithm using different tools at once, like full cut and half cut or full cut and creasing simultaneously in an automated workflow environment.

Valloy Inc. will feature its digital press portfolio with newly developed technologies, including a white color kit for its digital label press, BIZPRESS13R, with professional RIP software for color management and white conversion. Also, a sustainable eco substrate using limestone ZIO-FAPER label will be printed during the show. New roll and sheet cutting devices will also be unveiled. Plus, a sheetfed device, the Duoblade FX, will show robust performance by Perfect-Cut algorithm using different tools at once, like full cut and half cut or full cut and creasing simultaneously in an automated workflow environment.

Xeikon will present new innovations to drive progress and greener growth. They include: the Cheetah 3.0 series of toner presses that play a pivotal role in minimizing carbon footprint. ECO Toner, formulated with over 60% high-grade repurposed PET, which makes it ideal for eco-conscious packaging that ensures stringent compliance. To guarantee the highest quality and lower waste hence lower cost, Xeikon has developed the Quality Measurement Module (QMM). The QMM is responsible for quality assurance, monitoring density and registration throughout the print run. Also, Xeikon’s new Sustainability Scorecard offers a transparent means of proving compliance with various regulations while also helping brand owners with their sustainability goals. The Scorecard will illustrate the carbon footprint of each Xeikon press.
