Building on the APR Design recognition in North America, Avery Dennison is now the first manufacturer to offer an RFID solution recognized by both major regional bodies for compatibility with mechanical PET recycling streams.

Avery Dennison has received RecyClass Technology Approval in Europe for its AD CleanFlake RFID tags, making it the first manufacturer to offer an RFID labeling solution recognized by both RecyClass in Europe and the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) in North America for compatibility with mechanical PET recycling streams.
The approval enables multinational brand owners to specify a single RFID label construction for PET packaging across North American and European markets, simplifying material selection while supporting recycling and regulatory objectives.
The AD CleanFlake RFID solution combines Avery Dennison’s proprietary CleanFlake adhesive technology with a patent-pending RFID inlay and label construction. During mechanical recycling, the label and RFID components separate cleanly from rigid PET, helping minimize adhesive and metal contamination while preserving the quality of recycled PET flakes.
According to Avery Dennison, the technology is designed to support the growing adoption of RFID without compromising recyclability. The approval also helps brands address the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which places greater emphasis on packaging recyclability and circular design.
“When APR recognized the AD CleanFlake RFID products, it validated that RFID and PET recyclability no longer have to be in conflict,” says Pascale Wautelet, vice president of global R&D and sustainability for Avery Dennison Materials Group. “We’re proud that RecyClass Technology Approval validates our RFID tag compatibility with the European PET bottle recycling stream.”
Paolo Glerean, chairman of RecyClass, said the approval demonstrates that recycling-compatible RFID solutions are commercially available and can help companies meet emerging circular economy requirements.
Avery Dennison noted that the RecyClass and APR recognitions apply specifically to the RFID label construction and adhesive under defined testing conditions. Brand owners remain responsible for verifying the recyclability of their complete packaging designs.
