Is ownership still the right model for digital label production?

By Danny Mertens, marketing manager, Xeikon

The way converters access digital printing capacity is starting to change. Ecolyne represents a new approach to digital label printing, combining Flint Group Digital Xeikon’s established dry-toner technology with a business model that fundamentally changes how production capacity is accessed. Developed as a completely new press platform, Ecolyne is designed to make high-quality label printing more accessible, particularly for converters seeking flexibility without the burden of large capital investments.

In traditional label production, entering digital printing often requires significant upfront expenditure on equipment, along with ongoing costs for maintenance and consumables. Ecolyne addresses this challenge through a subscription-based “capacity-on-demand” model. Instead of purchasing the press, customers pay a monthly fee for a defined volume of prints. This fee includes the use of the press, servicing, and consumables, allowing converters to align costs more closely with actual production needs while maintaining predictable operating expenses.

Technologically, Ecolyne builds on Flint Group Digital Xeikon’s long-standing expertise in dry-toner electrophotography. The press uses standard QB toners, which are food-safe and known for delivering consistent, high-quality results across a wide range of applications. With a print resolution of up to 1200 dpi, support for up to five-color printing, and the ability to handle various substrates—including paper, polypropylene, polyethylene, and PET films—Ecolyne provides the versatility required for modern label production.

A defining characteristic of Ecolyne is its focus on essential functionality, removing complexity that many standard label applications simply don’t require. Rather than incorporating the full range of premium features available in higher-end Xeikon presses, the system has been engineered to meet the core requirements of standard label jobs. This deliberate simplification enables a more cost-effective solution while preserving the reliability and print quality associated with Xeikon technology.

The press is manufactured in Belgium, leveraging Flint Group Digital Xeikon’s global engineering and production capabilities. It is designed to integrate with finishing solutions through partnerships with local suppliers, allowing converters to build a complete production workflow tailored to their specific needs.

Ecolyne also reflects broader shifts within the label printing industry. As demand increases for shorter print runs, faster turnaround times, and greater customization, flexibility has become a key competitive factor. The traditional model of equipment ownership can limit this flexibility, particularly for smaller or growing businesses. By offering digital printing as a service, Flint Group Digital Xeikon provides a model that enables converters to respond more quickly to market demands while minimizing financial risk.

With initial installations planned from 2026 and a rollout strategy beginning in the Asia-Pacific region, Ecolyne is positioned as an entry point into digital label production for a new segment of the market. It offers not only a new press, but a new way of thinking about how printing capacity is accessed—one that prioritizes scalability, efficiency, and ease of adoption.
