As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, Monadnock Paper Mills is reflecting on its own role in the country’s manufacturing heritage. Founded in 1819, the company is recognized as the oldest continuously operating paper mill in the United States, bringing more than two centuries of papermaking expertise to the fine printing, packaging, and specialty paper markets.

Over its 207-year history, the New Hampshire-based manufacturer has continually adapted to changing market demands while maintaining a focus on quality, innovation, and responsible manufacturing practices.

“Monadnock’s longevity reflects more than its history,” says Chloe Jones, director of Marketing & Communications at Monadnock Paper Mills. “For over two centuries, the company has adapted to changing market needs while remaining committed to quality, responsible manufacturing, and the continued development of fiber-based materials that help customers make more sustainable choices.”

Today, Monadnock produces a broad portfolio of fine printing, packaging, and technical papers serving brands, retailers, designers, printers, converters, and manufacturers. Its products support applications ranging from premium packaging and retail signage to gift cards and specialized technical applications.

The company said its domestic manufacturing model enables close collaboration with customers to develop materials tailored to specific performance, aesthetic, and production requirements, while also providing greater supply chain visibility and responsive technical support.

Sustainability remains a key part of Monadnock’s strategy. The company continues to invest in fiber-based alternatives that help reduce reliance on conventional plastics, including its Un-Plastic portfolio and other packaging innovations.

Monadnock holds an EcoVadis Platinum sustainability rating, sources FSC-certified fiber, manufactures using Green-e-certified renewable wind power, and operates under a third-party-certified ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.

As both the company and the nation mark significant milestones, Monadnock said its history demonstrates how American manufacturing can continue to evolve by combining generations of expertise with modern innovation and sustainable practices.
