TLMI (Tag & Label Manufacturers Institute) has announced that Hopewell, VA-based Evonik Corporation has recently become LIFE certified and that the company is the 62nd facility to achieve TLMI LIFE Certification.
The LIFE program was developed in order to assist TLMI members in finding cost effective ways to reduce their companies’ environmental footprint. LIFE is a program designed specifically for the narrow web marketplace and addresses four key elements of the narrow web printing and converting industry: clean production, energy and greenhouse gases, product and environmentally preferable materials, and management practices.
Evonik is the first release coating supplier to become LIFE-certified. Liz Patterson, Evonik’s Americas marketing manager, comments, “Sustainability in the label industry has become a major focus in the past few years. As a raw material supplier in the industry Evonik sees customers striving to achieve higher integrity in the sustainable packaging arena. Goals are increasing to reduce CO2 emissions, reduce raw material use and also to recycle the waste products produced. Major trends have developed in reducing the label size to reduce waste and lower transportation costs as well as many customers now producing linerless labels.
"Our customers who have received LIFE certification have benefitted from this greatly when negotiating the sale of their products to CPG companies. What better way to support our customers and to continue to drive positive change in the industry then having our products included in the LIFE program," Patterson says.
Evonik manufactures a relatively new type of silicone-based release coating which cures instantly under UV light. "Curing this type of chemistry requires substantially less energy inputs than the more traditional, thermally cured silicones and their release coatings require no harsh chemicals or solvents. Joining the LIFE program made perfect sense for Evonik's Release Coatings group. The Evonik team hopes that the certification will be a benefit for our customers as well as driving a change for the industry, pushing more suppliers to become involved," concludes Patterson.
The TLMI LIFE Program is the only certification platform tailored to the specific requirements of the narrow web printing and packaging industry.
