The Massachusetts Legislature Manufacturing Caucus, which includes more than 60 legislators from around the Commonwealth, and FLEXcon Company, Inc., an adhesive coating and laminating supplier, announced the selection of FLEXcon as Manufacturer of the Year in recognition of its efforts to help ensure the safety of frontline workers during the pandemic.
As COVID-19 took hold in the region last spring, FLEXcon worked with local hospitals and EMS to design disposable face shields to help address the shortage of face masks. To date, they have donated over 20,000 face shields to over 300 local organizations and others across the country. Thereafter, Harrington Hospital reached out to FLEXcon to develop a disposable test hood for qualitative fit testing, and in less than 24 hours, a prototype had been created. Both were simple yet effective solutions designed to help keep people safe.
“We saw an immediate need as the shortage of face masks became apparent and looked for a way to address the problem for local frontline workers through the development personal protective equipment (PPE),” says Lavon Winkler, President & CEO, FLEXcon. “What began as an endeavor to help local hospitals and EMS became a nationwide initiative.”
“I think it’s important to recognize companies in the Commonwealth that are able and willing to pivot production during crisis to help the community,” says Massachusetts State Senator, Anne Gobi. “FLEXcon’s actions made a difference in limiting the spread and impact of COVID-19 in our region, especially during the early days of the pandemic.”
The purpose of the Massachusetts Legislature Manufacturing Caucus is to link manufacturers in the region to the State legislature for issues that affect the Commonwealth’s manufacturing industry. This includes setting policies to build upon the excellent history of manufacturing here in Massachusetts through innovation and the application of advanced technology, as well as aligning education programs to address challenges in filling skilled positions through collaboration with local colleges and technical high schools. “By supporting innovation, we help ensure the vitality of manufacturing in the region,” says Gobi, “while also bolstering the local economy through the creation of talent pipelines within the region.”
