ACOBAN, Mexico’s label association, recently bestowed 30 scholarships to graphic arts students.
During an event on May 8, ACOBAN presented 20 “scholarships of permanence” – scholarships that cover 50% of the recipient’s semester tuition. In addition, six “scholarships of excellence” were awarded, which cover 90% of a semester’s tuition.
“We welcomed the participation and donation of four more “excellence” scholarships that covered 90% of the semester by the following companies: Two scholarships of excellence by TEF México, S.A. de C.V., one scholarship of excellence by ETIFILMS, S.A. de C.V. and one scholarship of excellence by CAINTRA, the Chamber of Industrial Transformation of Nuevo León,” said ACOBAN's Monica Gabriela Martinez Garza.
ACOBAN President Gerardo González, as well as Vice President Jorge Martinez were present during the ceremony and were then given a tour of a graphic arts workshop. The pair also observed a flexography class to see what students are learning. “Some students were actually doing their internships that day and their parents were there representing them. It’s wonderful to see their excitement in receiving this help from the association,” Martinez Garza said.
Digital tour
On June 4, ACOBAN took 50 students in their second graphic arts semester on a “Tour Digital” at label converter and ACOBAN member Etimex’s digital printing facility. Here, the students were educated on digital print technology, and were shown demonstrations of Etimex’s HP Indigo presses.
The tour showed the students how the graphic design department works with the client and their specific needs, and how the machinery processes the images. The students were are able to see how the machine operate throughout the digital workflow.
One-on-one networking
ACOBAN’s “One on One” networking event took place May 20 at the Habita Hotel in Monterrey. The event was exclusive to association members, both converters as well as suppliers.
“We do these events in order to give everyone the opportunity to get to know one another and for our supplier members to have the chance to sit down with the owners of the converting companies,” Martinez Garza explained. “This way they learn more about the company and their needs, and are able to show new products, or how they could benefit from these products.”
During the networking event, the supplier members have the opportunity to choose from the converter list – four companies with whom they’d like to meet – and are given 15 minutes to sit down with them. Then the meetings rotate. “Once they had all sat down with their ‘appointments,’ we continued on to enjoy some networking time and drinks. Also I’d like to mention that a special recognition was given to Mr. José Alfonso Rubio from Materiales y Etiquetas Millennium for having served as our President for two years. Our new president, Mr. Gerardo González from Etiprint, gave some words and presented the recognition to Mr. Rubio.”
CRG joins ACOBAN
On Friday June 5, Chicago, IL, USA-based Channeled Resources Group (CRG) officially joined ACOBAN as a supplier member. “We are very excited to have another international company join our association and we hope to have great opportunities come from this,” Martinez Garza said. Recently, CRG president (and L&NW columnist) Calvin Frost along with Sandy Briolat, also from Channeled Resources presented to ACOBAN members on the topic of “Recycling & Ecological Processes in Flexo.”
