Worlds collide in this issue of L&NW. This is the month where Labelexpo takes over the industry, when suppliers and converters converge in Brussels. Of course, suppliers and converters get together daily in the course of doing business, but Labelexpo Europe is the most international event on our calendar, and it’s also huge. If you think the show in Chicago is big, the Brussels version is that much bigger, and also more diverse. During the 2015 edition, visitors came from 133 different countries.
Take a look at the exhibitor directory (p. 108). There are well over 600 exhibitors at this year’s show. And in perusing the countries of origin, you’ll find a strong presence of suppliers from North America and Asia, in addition to the host continent of Europe.
But the spirit of “worlds colliding” goes well beyond geography. This is the show where professionals from flexible packaging and other industries associated with packaging and printing exhibit and visit, looking to break through and gain business from the label segment. It’s where, alongside converters, packaging designers and brand owners are walking the aisles. It’s where partnerships are forged, ideas are sparked and decisions are made.
The theme goes beyond our Labelexpo coverage, thanks to our wonderful columnists. In The Bottom Line (p. 46), Rock LaManna writes about Channeled Resources, a family business and supplier to the industry that is steeped in sustainability. The company continues to evolve and succeed by reinventing itself and adapting to change. Rock goes into detail about how worlds collide within Channeled Resources.
Channeled Resources was founded by Calvin Frost – who I am proud to call a member of the L&NW family. He is our longtime columnist and the passionate author of Letters from the Earth (p. 42). It’s there, in each issue, where he discusses the sustainability challenges our industry faces, and implores those that wield the most influence to address the issues, innovate and demand changes that would make our historically “un-green” industry more sustainable.
Taking a page from Calvin’s book in this issue is Jack Kenny. In his Front Row column (p. 44), Jack explores the global waste crisis, and spells out how utterly massive the amount of garbage is that us humans produce all over the world. The founding editor of this publication, Jack is not only family to L&NW, but also to me, personally. I came into this industry over nine years ago as L&NW’s associate editor, and Jack taught and mentored me about both the label business and journalism. He also educated and coached me on how to drink beer in Brussels and wear comfortable shoes for walking the expansive floor of Labelexpo Europe, both of which I am forever grateful.
