There are experts who will come into your business and pretend to be an expert in all things. They will give you some good advice...and then they will cross the line into territory where they don’t belong.
Here’s what I mean. I’m an advisor, business broker, and a matchmaker between buyers and sellers. I am a business owner myself, and I have personally bought and sold companies. I am a licensed real estate professional. I am a confidante who respects every client’s discreet situation.
While I am very knowledgeable, for example, about a company’s financials or the areas where there is risk, I don’t pretend to be a CPA or attorney. I’m not a psychologist or marriage counselor, although that’s a common issue as business owners plan for life after they leave the business.
When I am asked questions outside the scope of my client work, I am honest when I say: I can give you an overview on this topic, and then you need professional advice from an expert who has a license, impeccable credentials, and a lifetime of experience in their field.
