S-One Labels & Packaging officially launched in March of 2018, but its roots are steeped in history. For the past 25 years, S-One Labels & Packaging’s parent company, S-One Holdings Corp., has been a mainstay in the commercial and digital printing industries.
S-One Holdings Corp. operates with multiple subsidiary companies: LexJet, Brand Management Group, Utopia Digital Technologies, ABAQA, and now S-One Labels & Packaging. “S-One was founded on a product innovation 25 years ago–through LexJet–and over the years has created additional products that have solved major problems in the print industry,” explains Ralph Giammarco, vice president of S-One Labels & Packaging. “The company has maintained a leadership role in not only new-to-the-world product development, but also in the way sales, customer service and supply chain activities were conducted.”
S-One Labels & Packaging is designed to service narrow web print service providers, focusing specifically on HP Indigo press operators. In addition to the company’s establishment in the Americas, S-One Labels & Packaging formed roots in Canada in June. The company will also launch its newest division, S-OneLP-EMEA, in November.
Giammarco, who has significant industry experience, leads the division with Tom Hauenstein, global sales director. Since its inception in March, the S-One Labels & Packaging team has expanded to 14 individuals. The employees touch all aspects of S-One operations, including sales, logistics, product development, marketing and more. S-One Holdings, the parent company, maintains a global staff of 152 employees. S-One’s Sarasota, FL headquarters are accompanied by an EMEA division in Barcelona, Spain and R&D and coating manufacturing in New Berlin, WI, USA.
S-One Labels & Packaging offers a wide range of products to the narrow web industry, but its focus is on helping digital narrow web printers expand their label printing business into flexible packaging. “Our product line includes inline and off-line primers, overprint varnishes, customizable coatings, flexible packaging films – both pre-laminated and customizable,” says Giammarco. “Our differentiator is that we bring some of the most innovative solutions to the market and combine them with extensive educational resources and technical support.”
According to Giammarco, S-One Labels & Packaging tailors its business to the needs of short-run print providers. “An important difference is that because we partner with the most reliable manufacturers in the industry, small print companies can work with S-OneLP to purchase only the materials they need – meaning no minimum orders,” he says. “So, they can buy one pail of coating or just one small roll of film. This is vitally important for short-runs and prototyping, which digital printers specialize in. Typically, large manufacturers will not sell materials in small quantities, so we are providing that unique service in this market.”
S-One Labels & Packaging provides materials and technical know-how for its customers, and it anticipates a bright future. The company has recently been active in major industry trade shows as it looks to grow its presence.
“We just got started and we’ve seen incredible growth and interest within the industry,” states Giammarco. “We’ve partnered with major players and have added new partners each month, so we only see it growing from there. Many new products have already launched, with the most recent ones coming out in September. New solutions, like compostable digitally printed packaging, are on the near-term horizon. We’ve participated in Dscoop and Labelexpo Americas this year, and we look forward to even more industry interaction next year, as well as doing all we can to help our customers excel in label and flexible packaging printing.”
At Labelexpo Americas, S-One Labels & Packaging highlighted a new Michelman product that allows label printers to create more durable labels, whether they be for lawn mowers or chemicals. This product is part of HP’s Pack Ready for Labels program. Additionally, the S-One team presented an HP Indigo-specific roller cleaner that’s simple and effective, and something that the company says is a favorite among the HP Solutions Architects.
With a “Fresh & Fast” theme, S-One Labels & Packaging also participated in the Ecovillage. The company is committed to finding sustainable solutions for the printing industry, as the company strives to convert waste into energy pellets.
S-One Labels & Packaging also relies on several key industry partnerships. It functions as the sales and marketing arm for VerifyMe, a technology solutions company that markets a broad patent portfolio and proprietary products that provide identifiers and serialization for authenticating, tracking and tracing functions for labels, packaging, products, people and financial transactions. VerifyMe provides HP Indigo-approved security inks for overt and covert product authentication, representing new opportunities for the market.
Partnerships are a cornerstone of S-One Labels & Packaging. The company has also teamed up with Kustom Group to offer a wide variety of overprint varnishes and coatings, which can become assets for both flexo and digitally printed label and packaging markets. This new partnership allows PSPs to receive products more quickly and the ability to create one-of-a-kind UV-based coatings. These coatings can perform special functions like greater adhesion, more or less gloss levels, light or gritty sand, hieroglyphics effects and scratch-and-sniff.
The company has built a business that can service customers regardless of location, and business is only expected to grow from here. “The economies in our three major locations have been growing and positive, and the market for digital printing of labels and flexible packaging is experiencing very high growth,” says Giammarco. “Due to the combination of our global footprint and S-One’s state-of-the-art communication technologies that allow for our team to be easily connected via video and systems, we can have productive workers in any region and working out of home offices. This diversifies our risk of being affected by fluctuations in local job markets.”
Flexible packaging has seen tremendous growth recently among label and narrow web converters, and digital’s presence increases year-over-year, as well. S-One Labels & Packaging believes it has carved out a niche in two surging sectors, which should lead to a prosperous future. “There is a convergence occurring that is driven by the megatrend of customers demanding customization of content and packaging and enabled by the advances in materials and print technologies,” says Giammarco. “With the consumer and brand demand for customized flexible packaging, we see digital printing being a vital player in the future. Customized packaging is easily achieved using digital printing, and we are working hard to give our customers the tools they need to succeed. This includes not just high performing materials, but, as importantly, information on how to create effective processes, to communicate capabilities, and to answer all of their customers’ demands.
“With the emergence of small brands and organic foods, and the capabilities to develop truly sustainable solutions in our sights, the label and packaging markets are forever being changed,” he adds. “This is truly one of the most exciting and fun places to be. Not just in our printing world, but compared to any industry.”
